Singing for the Brain We are currently facilitating group singing sessions in Kendal for people with dementia and their carers. The group runs on Wednesday afternoons between 1.30 and 3.30pm until 28th March inclusively, following which the Alzheimer's Society is hoping to secure interest and funds to continue this vital resource in Kendal from April. 'Singing for the Brain' is a service provided by the Alzheimer's Society in approximately 30 locations around the UK, all of which use singing to bring people together in a friendly and stimulating social environment. Singing is not only an enjoyable activity, it can also provide a way for people with dementia, along with their carers, to express themselves and socialize with others in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Hidden in the fun are activities which build on the well-known preserved memory for song and music in the brain. Even when many memories are hard to retrieve, music is especially easy to recall. www.alzheimers.org.uk If either you or your partner or friend have had a recent diagnosis of dementia then we want to positively encourage you to come along. All you need do is ring Fiona Moncur from the Alzheimer's Society on 01539 742617 to express your interest. You can hail from anywhere in the South and East of Cumbria but please be aware that Fiona can only invite people in to the group who have a definite diagnosis of dementia from a GP. If you would like to offer your financial support to this worthy cause or would like to get involved yourself in the group in a voluntary capacity please also call Fiona on the number above. |
